Luxor is the densest concentration of ancient sites in Egypt, and the reason most Nile itineraries pass through it. Karnak's hypostyle hall takes an hour on its own; the Valley of the Kings takes a morning if you do it properly. Every Luxor day tour below is private, with a licensed Egyptologist and hotel pick-up.

East bank versus west bank
The east bank is Karnak and Luxor Temple, best done together in an afternoon when the light is low. The west bank — the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's terraced temple and the Colossi of Memnon — takes a whole morning starting before eight, or a full day at a slower pace with a Nile crossing by felucca.
Hot-air balloons at dawn
Bookable the night before through your guide, roughly $120 per person including hotel pick-up at 4am. Worth it once in your life; skippable if you dislike heights or early alarms.
Best months for Luxor
November to February for the tombs. October and March-April are shoulder — hot in the middle of the day but manageable if you start early. May to September we push guests toward the Red Sea and keep Luxor mornings only.

When to visit Luxor
November to February is when Luxor is at its best. Summer is manageable if you finish sightseeing by eleven.
November – FebruaryPeak. 23–25°C in the day, cool nights. Tombs at their best; also the busiest.
March – April, OctoberShoulder. 29–35°C. Thinner crowds, decent prices, still comfortable at the sites.
May – September38–42°C. Balloon rides at dawn and Karnak by 7am, then air-conditioning until sunset.
Khamaseen windMarch – April can bring hot southerly dust for a day or two. Not dangerous, just hazy.

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival or apply online before travelling. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

The currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). US dollars and euros are widely accepted at hotels and cruise boats; local shops and cafés want EGP.

Health & safety
Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially in the main destinations. Standard travel-health precautions apply.

Customs & etiquette
Egyptians are famously hospitable, and small courtesies go a long way. The below is the minimum.
PhotographyAsk before photographing people. Never photograph military or police installations.
RamadanSites stay open with shorter hours. Many restaurants close during the day; hotels serve normally.
AlcoholAvailable in hotels, cruise boats, and licensed restaurants. Not sold in supermarkets during Ramadan.
HagglingExpected at Khan El Khalili and the papyrus/perfume shops. Start at 40% of the asked price. Not expected at supermarkets, restaurants or hotels.

Luxor holds the densest concentration of ancient sites in Egypt, so a single day feels tight. Karnak's hypostyle hall alone can absorb an hour, and the Valley of the Kings deserves a full morning if you visit the tombs properly. We usually suggest splitting the East and West Banks across two private days so nothing is rushed.
Your standard entry ticket covers a set number of open tombs, with a few of the most famous ones (such as Tutankhamun) requiring a separate ticket. Your licensed Egyptologist will steer you toward the best-decorated tombs open on the day and away from the crowded ones. We include the standard entry tickets, and any special-ticket tombs can be added on request.
In summer the Valley of the Kings can reach 42°C by lunchtime and is shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning, so our Luxor tours start early to beat both the heat and the coach groups. An early start means cooler tombs, better light for photos and quieter temples. Because every tour is private, the exact start time is set to suit you and the season.
