Yes, once in a lifetime. Three hours south each way in a convoy through the desert, arriving just after sunrise when the light hits the four colossal statues at the entrance. The alternative is the 45-minute Cairo–Aswan flight, still $145 per person total but far easier on the sleep.

When to visit Aswan
October to March. Aswan runs about 2°C hotter than Luxor, so by May it is unpleasant in the middle of the day. The Nile is spectacular year-round from an air-conditioned boat.

When to visit Aswan
Aswan runs 2°C hotter than Luxor, so plan around it accordingly.
November – February24–27°C. The Nile at its best; felucca sailing at sunset is genuinely lovely.
March – April, October – November30–36°C. Still fine if you avoid noon.
May – September42°C by lunchtime. Cruise days on the boat are fine; Abu Simbel needs a pre-dawn start.

RamadanSites stay open with shorter hours. Many restaurants close during the day; hotels serve normally.
AlcoholAvailable in hotels, cruise boats, and licensed restaurants. Not sold in supermarkets during Ramadan.
HagglingExpected at Khan El Khalili and the papyrus/perfume shops. Start at 40% of the asked price. Not expected at supermarkets, restaurants or hotels.
