When to visit Alexandria
Alexandria is Mediterranean weather — mild winters, hot but never furnace-like summers.

The currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). US dollars and euros are widely accepted at hotels and cruise boats; local shops and cafés want EGP.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially in the main destinations. Standard travel-health precautions apply.

Egyptians are famously hospitable, and small courtesies go a long way. The below is the minimum.
PhotographyAsk before photographing people. Never photograph military or police installations.
RamadanSites stay open with shorter hours. Many restaurants close during the day; hotels serve normally.
AlcoholAvailable in hotels, cruise boats, and licensed restaurants. Not sold in supermarkets during Ramadan.
HagglingExpected at Khan El Khalili and the papyrus/perfume shops. Start at 40% of the asked price. Not expected at supermarkets, restaurants or hotels.

Yes, and it is a popular full day. Alexandria is about three hours each way on the desert road, so our itinerary front-loads the drive to have you at the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa by mid-morning. If you can spare it, an overnight makes the day far more comfortable, but the round trip is very doable as a private day tour.
The classic route covers the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Qaitbay Citadel built on the foundations of the ancient lighthouse, and the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina that revives the memory of the ancient library. Pompey's Pillar and the Roman theatre are common additions. Your Egyptologist adjusts the order to keep the day flowing.
It is a long day but a well-run one. With roughly six hours of driving in total, the key is starting early and sequencing the sights efficiently, which our private itinerary does. If the pace concerns you, an overnight in Alexandria turns it into a relaxed two-day trip along the Mediterranean coast.
