Traffic is the deciding factor

Where to stay in Cairo
Giza puts you fifteen minutes from the pyramids and an hour from everything else. Zamalek and Garden City are quieter, greener and better for restaurants, and about thirty minutes from the plateau. Downtown is closest to Islamic Cairo.
What to expect at the Giza plateau
The plateau is open desert with almost no shade — a hat and water matter more than you think. Inside the tombs it is hot, still and steep. Old Cairo's churches and mosques ask for shoulders and knees covered, and shoes come off at mosque doors.

When to visit Cairo
Cairo is manageable year-round but the pyramids plateau is much more comfortable outside the summer.
November – FebruaryIdeal. 20–24°C, blue skies, dry. Nights can drop to 8°C — layers.
March – April, October25–32°C. Shoulder season, thinner crowds, still comfortable.
May – September35–40°C. Start Giza before 8am; head indoors from noon.
KhamaseenMarch – April dust storms. Visibility drops, photos suffer. Usually one or two days per season.
Visas & entry
Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival or apply online before travelling. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

Money & tipping
The currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). US dollars and euros are widely accepted at hotels and cruise boats; local shops and cafés want EGP.
ATMsWidely available in Cairo, Luxor and the resort towns. Withdraw EGP for local spending; the exchange rate is fine.
Guide tippingUS$10–15 per person per day is the norm. Driver US$5. Restaurant staff 10% if not on the bill.
Cruise crewUS$70–100 per person for a 4-night cruise, pooled and split by the boat manager on the last night.

What to wear
Layered light clothing during the day, something warmer for the desert at night, and a scarf if you're visiting mosques or churches.
At the sitesClosed shoes with grip (the tombs are steep), a hat, sunglasses and sun cream.
At the mosquesShoulders and knees covered. Shoes off at the door — a light scarf handles it.
On the cruiseSmart casual at dinner, swimwear on the sun deck, light layers for the top deck at sunset.

Health & safety
Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially in the main destinations. Standard travel-health precautions apply.
WaterBottled only, and included on every day tour. Ice at hotel and cruise restaurants is fine.
Travel insuranceComprehensive cover is a condition of booking. Must include diving and ballooning if you're adding those.
MedicalCairo and Sharm have international hospitals (As-Salam, Sharm International). Pharmacies open late, most staff speak some English.

Customs & etiquette
Egyptians are famously hospitable, and small courtesies go a long way. The below is the minimum.
PhotographyAsk before photographing people. Never photograph military or police installations.
RamadanSites stay open with shorter hours. Many restaurants close during the day; hotels serve normally.
AlcoholAvailable in hotels, cruise boats, and licensed restaurants. Not sold in supermarkets during Ramadan.
HagglingExpected at Khan El Khalili and the papyrus/perfume shops. Start at 40% of the asked price. Not expected at supermarkets, restaurants or hotels.

The Giza plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo are three genuinely different experiences, and cramming all of them into one day means rushing every stop. We split them across separate private day tours so each has room to breathe, and because every Cairo tour is private you set the start time and pace.
Yes. Every Cairo day tour is fully private, with a licensed Egyptologist and air-conditioned transport, and hotel pick-up and drop-off are included. Because the tour is yours alone, the itinerary and departure time flex around you rather than a fixed group schedule.
We usually recommend the Grand Egyptian Museum first, so the artefacts and context make the monuments at Giza far more legible when you stand in front of them. That said, both sit near the plateau, so your Egyptologist can order the day to avoid the busiest hours at each. On a private tour the sequence is entirely adjustable.
It is possible, but the two are on opposite sides of a large city and each deserves unhurried time. We generally keep them on separate days so you are not stuck in traffic instead of at the sites. If your trip is short, tell us and we will build the most sensible combined route for your dates.
Prices are per person in USD and include your licensed Egyptologist, entry tickets to the sites on the itinerary, air-conditioned transport and hotel pick-up.
